Is There Such a Thing As an “Independent LIMS Consultant”? Does It Matter?

I read a blog post recently from a LIMS consultant attempting to define what an independent LIMS consultant is. They defined “Independent” as “not directly involved with” and that it does not mean “small.” I agree with that definition. However, I contend that there is no such thing as an “Independent LIMS Consultant” or at least it is so rare that one can argue reasonably that it does not exist.

LIMS for the Bass Ackwards Lab…

LIMS for the Bass Ackwards Lab…

In starting a new lab, my friend has decided to purchase the LIMS first and then equip the lab with instruments and staff later. He has negotiated good contracts with other labs that will run his samples. He will receive samples, log them into the LIMS and run them down the street to a subcontract lab. The logged in sample data will be transmitted automatically to the LIMS of the subcontractor and the subcontractor will transmit back the instrument data to the contract lab.

The LIMS Home Grown Nightmare

The LIMS Home Grown Nightmare

In today’s world, the idea of building your own LIMS is becoming a thing of the past. There are many good products to choose from; but in case you are thinking of having a LIMS built for your lab, consider this image.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, What is the Largest LIMS of Them All?

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, What is the Largest LIMS of Them All?

Most labs have fewer than 25 people. So, does it really matter what the answer is to the question: “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, what is the largest LIMS of them all?” Well, you decide.

LIMS Are Like Sausages!

LIMS Are Like Sausages!

You would no more want to eat a plate of raw sausages than you would want to try to use a LIMS that was not configured specifically to your lab and ready to go as a turn-key solution.

LIMS and ISO 17025 Primer Tutorial

The following on-line video provides a tutorial primer on ISO 17025 and how a LIMS can help your lab with the issues surrounding compliance with those standards and requirements.  Audio speakers are highly recommended when viewing this video.

The best LIMS is the one you don’t use

The best LIMS is the one you don’t use

Change is hard for everyone, whether it is in your personal life or your work life and lets not even talk about that video game called Second Life (SL).  Change is good if you are getting rid of work, pointless if you are substituting one set of work for another and bad if it adds more work to your daily life in the lab. I have been implementing LIMS since 1992.  Some of the LIMS were custom built while all of the ones since 1997 have been COTS (commercial off the shelf) for all you non-government types.  In all that […]

LIMS Awards: Is It for Real or for Sale?

LIMS Awards: Is It for Real or for Sale?

Customers do a better job of evaluating software products than magazine editors. Let’s face it, labs know far more about LIMS than magazines that are in the business of selling ads. The editors have a bit of a conflict of interest don’t they?

Open Source….not a Hippie, Commie movement

For many software users and the companies they work for, Open Source Software has been viewed with great skepticism.  Frankly, I cannot blame them but the new generation of Open Source Software is not your old fashioned Hippie, Commie movement but a viable, quality driven, sustainable business model that is entering the mainstream of business. Let’s face it, in order to create a sustainable software business, the profit motive must be alive and well and must not depend upon the good nature of a community to develop it.  There are some folks who think that Open Source Software MUST be […]

What do you get when you use a pharmaceutical LIMS for a Water / Waste Water Laboratory?

What do you get when you use a pharmaceutical LIMS for a Water / Waste Water Laboratory?

I think this image is very appropriate for describing what life will be like for a water /waste water lab that chooses a LIMS built for the pharmaceutical industry.

The Internet has all but killed off print media. Will Pittcon be the next victim?

The Internet has all but killed off print media. Will Pittcon be the next victim?

A number of years ago, I wrote a blog entitled, “The king is dead, long live the king“.  You have probably been hearing about the demise of the numerous, old and venerable newspapers.  It is clear now, while the print media king is not dead yet, there is not much life left.  Check out “The Newspaper Industry Is Dying Before Our Very Eyes“.   Now consider the fate of such trade shows as Pittcon and how much life is left for this particular king. Why would the survival of Pittcon be in question?  The simple answer is that there are […]

Beware of the LIMS, Assembly Required, Batteries not Included…

Beware of the LIMS, Assembly Required, Batteries not Included…

I have noticed tons of job postings from customers who have purchased a LIMS who, apparently, need developer help to make it work.  Just take a look at this link to LIMS Developer Jobs.  I would have thought that when you purchase a LIMS that it would come pre-assembled and not in pieces such that you need a developer to make it work.  I guess the box it comes in should say “WARNING!  Assembly Required, batteries not included”. Once, I thought that the number of job postings for a LIMS was a good indication of how popular it was.  However, […]

SaaS Myths Debunked – Laboratories and Scientific Industries Reap the Benefits of SaaS

The most popular software as a service (SaaS) myths are a last ditch effort by non-SaaS software companies trying to inject FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) to slow the most impressive industry movement and technology disruption we have witnessed in at least the last 20 years.

It’s Not What You Know; It’s Who You Know: Social Media Opens Doors to the “Old Boy Network”

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” The adage still holds true and in a tight economy with jobs at a premium it can be a critical issue for those outside the inner circle. But just like so many other issues in various industries, it’s technology to the rescue; this is especially true in the laboratory, scientific and technical professions.

SaaS – Is a Web Hosted LIMS Right for Your Laboratory?

Simply put, a web hosted or SaaS LIMS is a (Laboratory Information Management System) that is a licensed, web hosted subscription that is paid for on a low monthly or annual fee basis as opposed to a customer, on-site installed, lump sum license purchase.

Federal Research Public Access Act Introduced Today

Federal Research Public Access Act Introduced Today

Washington, DC – Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and John Cornyn (R-TX) today introduced the Federal Research Public Access Act (FRPAA), a bill to ensure free, timely, online access to the published results of research funded by eleven U.S. federal agencies. The proposed bill is welcomed by the Alliance for Taxpayer Access, a coalition of research institutions, consumers, patients, and others formed to support open public access to publicly funded research. FRPAA would require those agencies with annual extramural research budgets of $100 million or more to provide the public with online access to research manuscripts stemming from such funding no […]

Managing and Analyzing Next-Generation Sequence Data

Managing and Analyzing Next-Generation Sequence Data

Centralized Bioinformatics Core Facilities provide shared resources for the computational and IT requirements of the investigators in their department or institution. As such, they must be able to effectively react to new types of experimental technology. Recently faced with an unprecedented flood of data generated by the next generation of DNA sequencers, these groups found it necessary to respond quickly and efficiently to the informatics and infrastructure demands. Centralized Facilities newly facing this challenge need to anticipate time and design considerations of necessary components, including infrastructure upgrades, staffing, and tools for data analyses and management.
