The Physician Office Laboratory requires an LIS to handle its lab data with best efficiency and effectiveness, but standard LISs are too complex and expensive for the scaled-down diagnostic CLIA-waived testing typical of the POL[1]. What is really needed is HIPAA-compliant handling of data, and the ability to produce a CLIA report and patient results report with flagged out-of-range results or positive/negative results. Any features and functions beyond that are value-adds, but the overriding principle must be to default to simplicity and reliability[2][3]. POL analysts are not typically fully trained and certified lab technicians, but often medical assistants or medical technicians who value a simple-to-use system.

The User Requirements Specification (URS) of the LIMSpec for the Physician Office Laboratory is a list of items to be considered when assessing an LIS, and is designed for use in querying potential suppliers/vendors and in making comparisons between them and their products and services.

Vendor Responses

The LIMSpec is designed to function much like an RFI rather than an RFP. That is, that each specification is aimed at learning about how your system meets or addresses the particular requirements or preferences of the physician laboratory, with regard to the item in question. Specifications are based on applicable clinical LIS standards.
