The LabLynx LIMS/LIS includes the ability to link up to other applications, databases and/or devices. For the LIS application, this means instruments used for assays, to streamline the data management involved, passing patient data from/to an EHR, for instance, so that assay requests are linked correctly with the patient and sent automatically to the lab, or pass the LIS results report to the EHR or a patient portal for viewing. Of course, in all types of labs, interfacing to any testing instruments is very common indeed, to eliminate the transcription errors and time involved with manual entry. Other systems or services (e.g. billing) and/or agencies (state reporting, CDC reporting) may also be entities with which the LIMS or LIS may want to integrate.[1]

Clinical Interfacing

For clinical labs, interoperability is a key aspect of clinical information management per HITECH, according to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC):

"The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT is responsible for advancing connectivity and interoperability of health information technology (health IT). ONC follows the IEEE definition of interoperability as the ability of systems to exchange and use electronic health information from other systems without special effort on the part of the user. Advancing health IT interoperability is a key element in helping transform the health care delivery system into one that provides better care, smarter spending and healthier people. ONC's overarching goal for electronic health information exchange is for information to follow a patient where and when it is needed, across organizational, health IT developer and geographic boundaries."[2]

Additionally, any proprietary O/S (operating system - e.g. Windows, Linux, OSX etc.) or other ancillary apps or hardware limitations affect the degree to which the LIS can inter-operate. It should be flexible and compatible with common environments.[3]

The LabLynx HealthCloud LIS fits with any clinical/healthcare lab environment, because it is cloud-based and can be accessed from any Internet-capable device. The second component of its compatibility is its ability to be interfaced with any other system, device/instrument, database, service or other entity in any ways they connect. Specify the interfaces you need to be included with your solution, and additional interface plugins are always readily available to be added any time you choose. They support any format necessary, including but not limited to REST API services, SOAP API services and File Import Export services for CSV, XML, JSON, XLS, DDE, OLE2, ODBC and more. LabLynx can interface with anything that has an API. Or it can interface through file sharing. Basically, anything that can be interfaced can be interfaced to the LabLynx, Inc. LIS, using our exclusive HealthCloudHub solution.

LOINC, SNOMED and PHIN are among the formatted communications systems your LabLynx LIS is capable of integrating with, and the HealthCloudHub Integration Plugin library includes those available channels.

HealthCloudHub, with LabVia, is at the heart of LabLynx, Inc.'s powerful hardware/software Plugin solution that allows integration between the LabLynx LIS and any other interface-able entities - like EHR/EMR, instruments/devices, agencies/organizations, services (e.g. billing services), reference labs, patient and provider portals, etc.

HealthCloudHub is available to all LIS subscribers, and meets CLIA and related compliance standards, using HL7 to communicate securely between linked points. LabLynx maintains a large and ever-increasing library of channels that are configured for communication with each kind of entity, and can also create custom channels as necessary.

The HealthCloudHub plugin is the complete solution for automating your practice, available through Help Desk ticket request or by contacting LabLynx, Inc. at the LabLynx website. A certified HealthCloudHub support associate will help you decide on a strategy that best fits your business plan, or simply get your office/lab integrated right away according to your own preferences.

Whether clinical or not, your lab benefits from the integrated, comprehensive data management solution that LabLynx provides in concert with the many and varied apps available with your included® community membership, as well as any other systems or devices you use.

Non-Clinical Interfacing

Interfacing requirements for labs are many and varied among the many different types of industries LabLynx supports. By far the most common need is for either a unidirectional (send results to the LIMS) or bi-directional (send sample information to the instrument, and return results data to the LIMS) interface with analytical instruments. LabLynx provides these types of link-ups in whatever manner the instrument allows. This can be either regular automatic checks for presence of a file and upload if found, API interface with its software, serial port direct feed, web services fetching, etc.

While the LabLynx LIMS and many of the other apps in the LabLynx and® libraries readily share files with instruments and other systems, there are also situations where the integration required is more complex. For those we have LabVia, LabLynx's exclusive middleware and hub hardware/software product, available through® to manage your connections and data sharing.

LabVia intelligently manages multiple data communications between all kinds of devices, services, systems or other sources.

Use LabVia to connect with:

  • SDMS, MES, PLM, DMS, EHR/EMRs, PMS or other Systems/Software or Databases
  • LIMS or other Laboratory Information Systems
    LabVia Middleware Hub
  • Instruments
  • Field Devices, Mobile, Hand-held etc.
  • POC Devices
  • Billing Services
  • Regulatory/Reporting Agencies
  • Reference or Contract Labs
  • More...

LabVia is available as an option with all® and LabLynx solutions.

LabVia Hub

The onsite part of the LabVia solution is the LabVia Hub. It is a hardware/software product that provides a central nexus point for all of the integrated nodes (instruments/devices, software applications etc.), intelligently managing their data. Full instructions on installation and setup are provided, and a LabLynx professional will guide you through the process. Or, if you prefer, we can come onsite and install it for you, ensuring all interfaced data points communicate properly. Many systems need only be able to provide files that your® Solution can access to process and report, and/or be able to receive sample information from the LIMS. If serial connections are required, then a LabVia channel is utilized, and your hub will link up with the cloud-based software portion of LabVia to ensure perfect data routing and management.

LabVia Cloud

The cloud portion of LabVia is hosted for you in our Cloud Platform (IaaS), keeping your integrations securely managed in real time. And any time you need more integrations (e.g. you buy new instruments that you'd like to interface with your system), we can add a new channel for you that is configured to transfer the data you want, in the ways you want them.

You can forget about the details and concentrate on your own work, secure in the knowledge that your interfaces will continue functioning perfectly for as long as you have them. All maintenance, support and warranty is included in your annual agreement.

If you'd like more information about LabVia or you have questions about integration of your devices, services and/or applications, contact® Support, search the Marketplace for qualified services or contact LabLynx at LabLynx Contact Us, or give us a call at 770.859.1992 or toll-free at 800.585.5969.

LabLynx is the ultimate in compatibility. It is cloud-hosted, so all that is needed to access it and use it is a web browser. It can be accessed from anywhere there is Internet access, any time. That means PC, Mac, tablet, mobile phone - whatever you like. Any authorized users can log into their LIMS or LIS and enter and/or receive samples, enter/approve results, look up data, reports etc. or do any of the range of functions your professional LabLynx system provides.
